Why Run

Hi all, sometimes I think that may be near the end of being able to run on a regular basis. But after reading articles such as the one here by Amby Burfoot then think maybe after 45 years can keep going. After all was also in this same mode of thought 10 years ago  when on a hike with Joshua experienced an itb band flare up. However a few months of regular exercise and easy jogging my knee felt as good as ever. Then in early 2017 an MRI showed that have ankle osteoarhritis. Again, after some time off was able to get back to it at a volume level had never reached before which includes 2300 miles in 2021 and 2200 in 2020.  During those two years did 6 virtual marathons, and placed second for two accumulative events ( 152 run miles plus 77 walking in 19 days and 302 miles via 252 running plus 60 walking over 30 days). Now am dealing with bunions and extra padding underneath my toes. Have cut back on the miles per week (volume) but still do regular uptempo sessions. Switching to zero drop wide box shoes has helped to stave off podiatrist offer of medical intervention. I don't want to do that until it is too painful to walk and or run. Am fearful at my age after the necessary several months off after the operations may never run again on a steady basis.

What gives hope is articles such as the one Amby Burfoot put together for Podium Runner magazine. The link attached will take you to the list of 10 substantiated health benefits of running. The one on how running can improve knee and low back health is my favorite as such was certainly true for me. When click on the title will be sent to link where can click to read. Also of note, even if one only runs once a week much of these benefits can be gained. Do keep in mind it does not matter how fast one goes, and that it is okay and in fact may be beneficial to intersperse run with walk miles during the same session.

So why run? Perhaps the question should be why not!
